THREE more local post offices are to shut.

Post Office chiefs have announced plans to axe branches in Liversedge and Spen Valley.

They admit they have not attracted the business to keep open all the offices.

Currently the area is served by 20 branches which is said to be too many, chasing too few customers doing insufficient business for all to survive.

As a result, and after talking to local sub-postmasters, Post Office Ltd is proposing that three branches should close to ensure the viability of those that remain.

The proposed closures will follow an extended six-week consultation period which will end on Tuesday, December 2.

The branches to shut are Liversedge Post Office, Liversedge; Healey Post Office, Batley; and Carlinghow Post Office, Batley.

News of the closures comes in the wake of a spate of post office closures across Huddersfield in the past nine months.

Offices to shut include Crosland Moor, Taylor Hill, Longwood, Lowerhouses, Netheroyd Hill and Cowlersley.

David Mellows-Facer, head of area for Post Office Ltd, said: "No change is not an option for Post Office Ltd which is losing increasing amounts of money - £194m last year alone.

"Nor is it an option for sub-postmasters whose branches are simply taking too little to pay their way.

"Not long ago this led to a spate of uncontrolled closures, with sub-postmasters believing they had no choice but to leave.

"By managing closures through this programme we will have fewer branches but these will be viable and have a future."
