MORE than 3,000 jobs have been saved after a buyer stepped in for childrenswear retailer Adams.

The company, which has a store on New Street in Huddersfield, has been bought out of administration.

The deal ensures that 273 stores, including the Huddersfield one, will continue trading.

But administrators at accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said they had been forced to close 42 poorly-performing stores.

The deal involves retail entrepreneur John Shannon - formerly chairman of footwear firm Stead & Simpson - and clothing chain Country Casuals.

Rob Hunt, a partner at PwC, said: "If we had not been able to complete this transaction it is highly likely that significantly more store closures and redundancies would have occurred."

Adams, based at Nuneaton, Warwickshire, is the UK's largest specialist retailer of children's clothing, with annual sales of £200m.

It also has several overseas franchise outlets and retail customers.

PwC said they would continue to be served following the deal.

Adams' holding company, Myriad Childrenswear, and its clothing subsidiary, TU Childrenswear, are not affected by the deal.

They will continue to operate as normal under the control of their directors.

PwC said the deal with Mr Shannon was completed immediately following its appointment as administrators.

Mr Hunt said: "This sale will enable 273 stores to continue trading, safeguard some 3,200 jobs and ensure that Adams continues to have a place on the high street."
