ALMOST 3,000 women have promised to take part in Huddersfield's Race For Life.

Entries for the females-only fun run in Greenhead Park in June are 20% up on the same time last year.

But Emma Young, the Huddersfield race organiser wants more women to register now.

The three-mile (five-kilometre) event on June 17 and 18 raises money for the Cancer Research UK charity.

It is supported by supermarket chain Tesco, with the Examiner being an official media sponsor of the Huddersfield race.

Emma said: "So far, 1,064 women have registered for the Saturday and 1,771 for the Sunday races in Huddersfield.

"There are 2,500 places available for each race and entries are around 20% up on last year. But we always want more women to take part.

"Also, volunteers are also needed to help out on the day."

The Huddersfield event is one of 230 across the country.

It is the seventh in Huddersfield and over the years the town's women have raised £834,000 to help support the charity's life-saving work.

Race For Life is open to women of all ages and fitness levels.

Nationally, the charity is hoping that 750,000 women will enter and raise £46m.

Last year's event raised £33m.
