MORE than 400 people gathered at Huddersfield Town Hall yesterday for a festive start to Christmas.

Jingle Bells, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and White Christmas were some of the favourites enjoyed as the Examiner Carol Concert got under way.

Members of the U3A Choir teamed up with about 80 children from Scissett Middle School Choir to take part in the annual event.

The two choirs sang their way through a full programme of favourite carols, accompanied by Huddersfield Music Centre Concert Band.

George Marsden provided the organ music and Examiner managing director John Griffith compered the event.

The audience also enjoyed coffee and mince pies.

Proceeds raised from raffles carried out on Examiner Travel trips throughout the year were also presented at the event.

A cheque for £4,100 was handed to the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust.
