THOUSANDS of people enjoyed a gala at an historic Huddersfield park yesterday.

There were musical performances, stalls and children’s entertainment at Beaumont Park.

Kirklees Mayor Clr Karam Hussain opened the gala at 2pm.

Emley Band, sponsored by Crosland Moor Community Shop, performed at the bandstand while Pennine Jazz played on the terrace.

Many groups, including Kirklees Council’s mobile library, had stalls at the gala, which was attended by about 4,000 people.

For children, there was the well-known magician G Wizz, as well as trampolines, donkey rides and a bouncy castle.

Lynette and Brett Rhodes from Crosland Moor visited the gala with their two-year-old twins Libby and Jake.

Lynette said: “It’s been lovely and we’re looking forward to hearing the bands. We live locally so we come to the park a lot.”

Yesterday’s event was organised by the Friends of Beaumont Park.

Chairman Peter Turner said: “I hope everyone had a good time at the gala.

“Our main objective is to get more people into the park.

“I’d like to thank the committee and our 40 volunteers who helped with the event. It’s a lot of hard work.”

The Friends of Beaumont Park is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It works with Kirklees Council to restore the 29-acre park, which was opened in 1883.

Recent work included the restoration of the gates, which was completed in April.

Mr Turner said: “We have more improvements planned, including clearing some of the trees to open up new vistas.”
