VANDALS ripped up part of a Brighouse park with their 4x4 cars, causing thousands of pounds damage.
They have used Wellholme Park as a racing ground over the last week.
But they left behind a mass of churned-up grass which will cost Calderdale Council thousands to repair.
It is thought they had entered the park off Thornhills Beck Lane.
Brighouse councillor Colin Stout said it would take months to repair the mess the drivers had caused.
He slammed the culprits, dubbing them as “grown men playing about with their toys”.
Police are now stepping up patrols of the park and are appealing for information about the culprits.
Clr Stout said: “It is antisocial behaviour which is worse than kids drinking in the park.
“This is going to cost us thousands to repair and, sadly, grass doesn’t grow overnight – it’ll take us some time.
“This has been done by grown men who should know better.”
Last Friday builders working on the development of the new Brighouse leisure centre at the park saw the damage caused.
They had just re-surfaced a flat area suitable for dog walkers near to the Thornhills Beck Lane side of the park.
Clr Stout added: “This is a green flag park – it is an important local amenity which many people enjoy.
“But it’s not for this sort of behaviour.
“If these men want to do this sort of thing they should go and rent a field somewhere – not do it in our park.
“They’ve ripped up the grass and made a right mess.
“We’ll do our best to get it sorted as quickly as we can.”
There has been a spate of similar incidents over the past couple of years with 4x4 drivers entering the park and racing in it.
Town councillors have asked Calderdale Council to look at ways of preventing access to the vehicles.
