More than 50 council buildings and plots of land are going up for sale.

Kirklees Council has now unveiled the next 56 lots that will be sold off as part of a bid to net more than £25m from surplus buildings and land.

In December Kirklees Cabinet assessed the list and feedback from ward councillors who had been consulted about buildings and land to be sold in each of the council’s 23 wards.

It was discussed in private although some opposition councillors made some of the list public in anger at the sell-off plans.

The full list has now been made public and it is expected the sales will take place over the next 18 to 24 months with a reserve price applied.

Clr Graham Turner, Cabinet member for Resources, said: “We are still facing 40% budget cuts and we have to look at our assets and make sure we’re making the most of them.

“There are areas where some buildings are used for half a day or only part of a week, yet they still cost us to run every day.

“Selling these is not a done deal, we recognise there are some that have a community value and there are deals to be done. The option for community asset transfers remains if the community has a long-term viable business plan and we’re willing to work with communities to help them through the process.

“Others are suitable for housing, which we need more of, so developers may be interested in it.”

Clr Turner is due to get an update next week on the sales over the last 12 months and he added: “The overall £25m is the estimated disposal target and features in the budget process, if we don’t reach our disposal target we’ll have to find the money elsewhere.”

It is likely many of the lots will go up for auction or sold on the open market, but Kirklees hasn’t ruled out selling by negotiation which includes to community groups or adjoining neighbours while the ‘civic’ buildings could be subject to a community asset transfer for no cost.
