COMMUNITY groups have received a £6,300 boost.

Parks groups, sports clubs, youth groups and pensioners’ societies have been given a funding boost.

It’s come from One Community, the Kirklees Community Foundation, which was formed to raise funds and gives grants to local charities and good causes in the district.

Sir John Harman, chairman of One Community, said the funding would make a big difference to community groups.

He said: “We are delighted to be able to support these local groups – it’s what One Community is all about.

“It is always a pleasure to listen to the inspiring stories shared by the groups, and to know that even a small amount can make a big difference in your local community.”

Those to benefit from the L Brierley fund are: WRVS Darby and Joan over 60s Club £500, Friends of Greenhead Park £300, The Lorna Young Foundation £484, Raw Talent £500.

From the Davy fund, set up by Ken Davy, are: Borough of Kirklees Special Needs Swimming Squad £500, Erin McLachlan £500, Shepley Junior Crown Green Bowling Club £250, Upper Hopton Cricket Club £310, Netherton Junior Football Club £200, 7th Clayton West Scout Group Council £500.

From the Longley Farm fund those to benefit are: Holmfirth Musical Festival £500, Holme Valley Gardening Network £448, Huddersfield and District Woodturners £600 and Holmfirth Festival of Folk £800.

It’s the second round of funding to be distributed to good causes throughout Kirklees.

Recipients received their cheques at a special presentation evening last week at Dewsbury Rams Tetley’s Stadium.

Helen Claydon, of the Friends of Greenhead Park, said their funding would go towards heating the park’s new pavilion.

She said: “The pavilion is now open and it’s being used by the Friends and the park bowlers. During the winter they still meet up and have games days, so the pavilion is regularly used.

“Our funding will go towards the cost of heating the pavilion..”

The Friends have organised at Christmas Sing-along which will take place in the park’s Conservatory on Sunday, December 16, from 2pm – 3pm. The Spot On Musical Theatre Group will lead the sing-along and people can join in the free festive fun.
