A STAGGERING 632 people applied for just 12 jobs at a new Huddersfield store.

They applied for a variety of roles at DFS, the firm famous for its TV sales advertising, which is to open an outlet off Leeds Road..

DFS, which lays claim to being the UK market leader, is creating the jobs with its investment in the 20,000sq ft store at Phoenix Retail Park, Leeds Road.

The store, which will open on Saturday, August 20, is one of 20 outlets DFS plans to open across the UK by July, 2013.

But bosses were amazed that some 632 people applied for the new jobs at Huddersfield, which include roles in management, sales and sales administration.

The chosen candidates have now begun training in areas including customer service.

DFS, which began trading more than 40 years ago, has created 151 new jobs so far in 2011 – with 68 of them located in the North of England.

It has been recruiting for stores in towns and cities including Hereford, Brentford, Stockport, Llandudno and Lincoln.

In Yorkshire, it already has stores at Birstall Retail Park, Leeds, Bradford, Doncaster and Wetherby.

Area sales manager Adam Hankinson said: “We are really looking forward to bringing DFS to Huddersfield.

“I’m really excited as we’ve recruited a great bunch of people.”

DFS is enjoying buoyant trading – in contrast to many of its rivals.

The firm was one of four Yorkshire firms to feature in the latest Sunday Times Deloitte Top Track 100, which lists the fastest-growing privately-owned businesses.
