A brave pensioner fought back after a man tried to steal her handbag.

She struggled with her attacker in a broad-daylight robbery in Lindley.

And police say the incident could be linked to a string of cash thefts and attempted thefts from the nearby Huddersfield Royal Infirmary car park.

The latest incident happened in at 5.15pm on Thursday in Lidget Street when the 76-year-old woman had just walked out of a shop. She was followed a short distance then approached from behind.

The attacker then spun her round and grabbed for her handbag.

But the woman refused to let go and tussled with the suspect before he managed to prise the handbag from her and fled the area.

Police were called to help the woman, who was shaken and suffered bruising to her arm.

The handbag contained her purse and a bottle of whisky.

Officers are potentially linking the incident in Lidget Street to a string of thefts near Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, just a few hundred yards away from the scene.

They are investigating a number of incidents where a suspect has approached asking for change but when the person opens their purse they grab cash.

Officers have stepped up patrols in the area but are urging the public to be vigilant.

Det Insp Andy Parr, of Huddersfield CID said: “Enquires are ongoing after a 76-year-old woman was robbed in Lindley at 5.15pm on Thursday. She tussled with the suspect before he grabbed the bag and fled.

“We have also received reports of a suspect asking people for change in the hospital car park before theft of cash.

“We would urge anyone who has witnessed these incidents to get in touch by phone on 101.”
