AN 82-YEAR-OLD woman is in a serious condition after being hit by a lorry.

The collision happened at 3.05pm yesterday on a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Willow Lane, Halifax Old Road and Bradford Road.

The victim was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary after the air ambulance carried out a landing on the main road outside the Waggon and Horses Pub.

Hillhouse resident Samer Khan was on the scene shortly after the collision.

He said: “The lady was on the floor and by the looks of it the front wheels had gone over her leg.

“The crowd had gathered to help her but no one could really say what had happened exactly.

“From what I saw I don’t think the truck could have been speeding because there is so much traffic around at that time of day.

“I saw her partly underneath the lorry and the paramedics were talking to her.

“The air ambulance took about 25 minutes and there were about 100 people standing around the railings so the traffic was stopped and they were told to give the helicopter room to land. It came straight down outside the Waggon and Horses.

“From what I could see of her one leg was worse than the other because one of them was raised up and bent but the other one was really bad. Everyone was hoping she’d be ok.”

At 7pm the vehicle was moved by a member of the police Collissions Investigations Unit.

Bradford Road was cordoned off from Halfords and traffic was diverted left through the nearby industrial park.

The collisions unit had surveyed the scene and marked the moment of impact on the road.

An officer of the unit then drove the lorry around between the cordon, first testing the brakes and also testing the horn.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the woman was in a serious but stable condition.

He added: “Any witnesses who saw the lady or the lorry at the time of the incident are asked to contact sergeant Carl Quinn or the Major Collision Enquiry Team by ringing 0845 6060606.
