A WELL-KNOWN Huddersfield factory could be demolished to make way for up to 90 homes.
Plover Mills at Lindley, the home of Bekaert Carding Solutions - formerly English Card Clothing - could be flattened.
An application has been submitted to Kirklees Council to knock down the factory and for outline permission for a housing development on the 1.85 hectare Plover Lane site. Under Government guidelines every hectare should have between 30 and 50 homes on it. The matter is due before the council's planning committee on April 26.
The site is still owned by Wakefield-based firm Carclo. Carclo sold the carding company to new owners Bekaert last summer, but kept ownership of the site. Carclo spokesman Eric Cook said the idea was to gain outline planning permission for the site before selling to a developer.
The Examiner understands that Bekaert's production will be transferred to existing premises in Cleckheaton.
