A TUTOR who has given his time freely for decades to help others has been honoured.

Ninety-year-old Mr Norman Howlings, was head of the English Studies department at Huddersfield Polytechnic (now University) at the time of his retirement in 1981, and has been a tutor with the University of the Third Age (U3A) since it started in Huddersfield in 1984.

Mr Howlings, who specialised in English literature, was presented with a copy of the Times newspaper from the day he was born by Huddersfield U3A president Mrs Margaret Fearnley at their AGM held at St Patricks Catholic Centre, Trinity Street.Huddersfield U3A is still thought to be the largest such group in the country, with over 2,000 members.

In the last year it ran 94 different classes with 24 other activities, such as bowling and walking.

U3A caters for people over 55 and the disabled. In Huddersfield it has 110 volunteer tutors who give lessons at 31 different locations.
