A PLAYGROUP will open a supermarket chain's latest store.

The Tesco Express on New Hey Road in Marsh will be opened by St James's Playgroup, which meets in nearby St James's Road.

The playgroup was one of about 20 charities and good causes to enter a competition to open the store next Monday and also win £500.

One of the playgroup's founders, Margaret Preston, along with chairman Carole Kenny and manager Vicky Horsefield will officially declare the store open at 10.30am.

During the ceremony Tesco Express manager Kirsty Crowther will present them with a £500 cheque.

Tesco chose to make the donation to St James's Playgroup as part of its commitment to supporting local communities.

Kirsty said: "We are delighted and honoured to welcome Carole, Vicky and Margaret along to open our new store and to donate to such a worthy cause."

The playgroup was founded more than 30 years ago for children aged from two-and-a-half to five, including those with special needs.

It continually has to raise cash. The £500 will be used to buy computer equipment.

Carole said: "We have always received a tremendous amount of support from the local community and we are delighted the new store has added to that support."

The store will open from 6am to 11pm, seven days a week. It is on the site of the former Westbourne Service Station, at the junction with Thornhill Road.
