A MOTHER and daughter have both won prizes in a national textiles contest.

Sue Davis and daughter Ellen, eight, of Slaithwaite, competed at the Festival of Quilts 2004 at Birmingham National Exhibition Centre.

Sue, who recently graduated from Bradford College with a degree in textile design, entered a wall hanging in the student section of the contest.

Daughter Ellen was so interested that Sue let her make a purse out of material scraps.

This was entered in the children's section.

Both mother and daughter won first prize in their sections.

Ellen won a Brother sewing machine while Sue won £1,000 for herself and £1,000 for Bradford College.

She said: "Ellen is delighted with her prize and hasn't stopped sewing.

"I'm really pleased."

Sue plans to set up a studio at Bates Mill in Queen Street South, Huddersfield, so she can start a textile design business.

Samples of Sue's work are at Bradford Industrial Museum until September 13.
