A ROAD accident has highlighted the need for urgent safety action, says a Mirfield councillor.

The call came after a lorry and a van were in collision in Hopton Lane, Mirfield. Residents had previously called for traffic-control measures.

Tory Clr Martyn Bolt said: "Three public meetings have been held over the concerns about this main route between Mirfield and Kirkheaton.

"Residents want traffic islands to force drivers to slow down and the question of lorry access should also be looked at."

Nobody is believed to have been hurt in the accident on December 22, but the van ended up on its side after crashing through a garden wall.

People on the Upper Hopton part of the road have formed a committee to press for safety measures.

Clr Bolt said: "Kirklees Council has promised, but it is taking time. Residents have predicted accidents and it has come true."
