A NEW bid to make sure taxi drivers keep their vehicles in good condition is set to be launched in Kirklees.

One move being considered is to force drivers to display a freephone number where passengers can complain.

Councillors on a think-tank are urging new moves after random tests revealed problems.

Police who made the checks found cars of a poor standard.

Taxi and private hire operators both agree that the inspection system should be changed.

The council panel's recommendations also include:

* Visual inspection of vehicles by councillors to be switched to officers and incorporated into the annual vehicle test.

* Old or high mileage vehicles to be tested more frequently, either as a matter of policy or at the vehicle tester's discretion.

* The tester to be able to recall vehicles for re-testing if there are concerns.
