WORK is due to start next month to rebuild a fire- ravaged Huddersfield school.

Greenside Infant and Nursery School at Almondbury was gutted by a fire in September.

Work to rebuild it was due to start before Christmas.

But, until two weeks ago, all that had been built were temporary classrooms, where children have been educated since the fire.

These were put up by Jarvis, which until recently was a shareholder in Kirklees Schools Services Ltd, the private public partnership which runs 19 Kirklees schools.

But Jarvis has sold its shares in KSSL and investment firm Secondary Market Infrastructure Fund (SMIF) joined Barclays Bank and Kirklees Council to make up the trio of shareholders.

After the temporary classrooms went up Jarvis had no involvement with the school.

The company has also decided not to start any new private-public partnership school-building projects. Instead, it plans to finish existing projects then pull out of the Private Finance Initiative market for schools completely.

A fortnight ago, concerns were raised with KSSL about the slow progress at Greenside.

Jarvis's successors, SMIF, provided resources to allow designs and legal documents to progress.

Now, final negotiations are under way with contractors Headmans to do the work.

Building should start next month.

This will be welcome news to pupils and staff at the school.

There had been fears that the money for the temporary classrooms would run out before the new school building was ready.

But SMIF spokesman said this was untrue.

He added: "The temporary arrangements will be retained until completion is achieved.

"Some delays have occurred. However, these are behind us. Every effort is being applied to getting things started on site."

A Jarvis spokesman said the firm did not want to comment.

He added: "We are not involved in this project any more."
