AN ADDICT hooked on intravenous drugs died of an overdose, an inquest heard yesterday.

Colin Pennington, 57, was found dead in his flat on Halifax Old Road, Birkby, on December 6.

The inquest heard that Mr Pennington had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse.

He also suffered from hepatitis C and liver disease.

A toxicology examination found levels of cocaine, morphine and alcohol.

In a statement read to the court, Michael Brown said his friend had bought a bag of heroin on the day of his death.

He said that within minutes of injecting himself, Mr Pennington became unresponsive.

He was dead by the time an ambulance arrived.

Deputy assistant coroner Paul Marks concluded that Mr Pennington's death was caused by the combined effects of heroin and alcohol.

He recorded a verdict of death by an overdose.
