THIEVES and drug addicts are blighting an allotment.

Jeanette Cowie claims people are openly taking heroin at the Cemetery Road allotments in Edgerton.

And now she wants better security for the site. She has appealed to Kirklees Council for more fencing to secure it.

She said: “They are quite blatant. I saw a man with his trousers down injecting himself in front of people working on the allotment.”

Mrs Cowie, who lives in nearby Highfields, regularly cleans the allotment. She said: “In one shed I found 200 needles.”

The 53-year-old said there were also thefts and vandalism at the site.

She said: “A new shed and greenhouse were burned to the ground recently and soil-turning machinery has been stolen.”

Mrs Cowie said the anti-social behaviour has been going on for more than eight years. And she added that some people had abandoned their plots.

Mrs Cowie said: “People have left the allotment because of intimidation by the drug users.”

She added: “I’ve called the police about this many times, as have others. The police don’t come round so people have given up contacting them.”

She also criticised Kirklees for lack of action.

Mrs Cowie said: “The council haven’t supervised the allotments properly. I want fencing put up to make the allotments safe and secure.”

She spoke at the monthly council meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall, asking councillors to take some action over the problem.
