A HOLME Valley butcher rubbed shoulders with a celebrity food critic when he achieved double success in a national competition.

Brindon Addy, of Addy’s Butchers at Hade Edge, struck gold in the annual Smithfield Awards organised by the Q Guild independent butchers’ group in London.

Addy’s Butchers was praised for its dry-cured back bacon and pork and tomato sausages in the competition.

Addy’s also received silver awards for its gourmet burger and flapjack, plus a bronze for its Nookie Pie, a steak and ale pie made with locally brewed Nook Oat Stout from The Nook Brewhouse, based at The Rose & Crown pub in Holmfirth.

The prizes were presented by broadcaster and food critic Jay Rayner.

Addy’s is already the reigning North of England champion in the annual Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards and was also chosen as Meat Buyer of the Year in the Pig & Poultry Marketing Awards in recognition of its commitment to sourcing meat direct from local farmers.

Mr Addy is national chairman of the Q Guild during its 25th anniversary year.
