ADULT education students have been rewarded for their achievements at Ashbrow Children's Centre.

People from Brackenhall, Sheepridge and Deighton have been studying a range of courses at the centre, which is part of the Early Excellence Centre based at Ashbrow Infant and Nursery School.

Seven courses were on offer and about 15 people signed up to each one.

Some of the students are parents with children at the school.

The awards were for Afro-Caribbean and Asian cookery, work with ceramics, health and beauty studies, an introduction to psychology, West Yorkshire Youth Training Association Team Building and Community Sports Leaders.

There was also an Early Start Award for children and parents who worked to boost language skills.

Some of the awards are accredited and provide a stepping stone to college education.

Early Excellence Centre co-ordinator Lynne Lynch said: "The aim is to engage people in further learning. This is especially good for people who have been out of education a long time.

"It builds up confidence.

"It is extremely rewarding seeing them move on to colleges or work."
