OLDER people are being urged to look after their feet to prevent falls.

According to Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees around one in three over 65s and half of those over 80 suffer a fall every year.

But a lot of those tumbles, which can be serious in later life, can be avoided by taking care of the feet.

Age UK is holding a Footprints in the Park event at Greenhead Park, Huddersfield, tomorrow (1pm-4pm) as part of Falls Awareness Week.

Locally 5,182 over 65s were admitted to hospital last year because of a fall.

Injuries spanned from cuts and bruises to broken hips and Age UK says the number of falls are rising each year, causing a growing problem for the NHS in Calderdale and Kirklees.

Health practitioners will be available at the event to offer footcare tips and advice on how to avoid falls.

There will be fun events, quizzes and the chance to win prizes.

A footprint trail will be created around the park where people can add their own print.

There will also be a special deal on tea and cake at the Park Café at Greenhead Conservatory.

Hilary Thompson, chief executive of Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees said: “There are lots of things to keep our feet healthy from simply having regular foot checks to wearing well-fitting shoes.”
