Drivers will face more delays at a busy Huddersfield junction from tomorrow.

The next phase of work at Ainley Top will see evening and overnight road closures to enable resurfacing to be carried out.

Work got underway on the five-month £2m scheme at the end of January.

Now the roundabout and surrounding roads, including the M62 slip roads at Junction 24, will be closed every evening and overnight for three weeks from May 6 until May 23 to enable resurfacing to be carried out safely.

The work will also include resurfacing the A629 Halifax Road between Ainley Top and Yew Tree Road.

Kirklees Council is liaising with the Highways Agency and the Agency will place signs to notify motorway users of the road closures.

The council will also work closely with METRO and local bus companies on information and changes to evening schedules.

During the evening closure period, the following roads will also be closed:

• A629 Halifax Road from Yew Tree Road

• Blackley New Road from Blackley Roundabout

• A643 Lindley Moor Road from the side road near Cedar Court Hotel

• A629 Huddersfield Road/Calderdale Way in Elland from the slip road to Elland Riorges Link

• A643 Brighouse Road from Grimescar Road (access to the Toby Carvery pub and restaurant will be maintained

• Huddersfield Road in Elland, leading to Calderdale Way from the last house.

The roads will be closed from 8pm to 6am on weekdays but will be open at weekends between now and May 23.

Ainley Top is being widened to three lanes on the roundabout with new traffic lights on each approach and exit to manage congestion.

New traffic lights will control traffic movements so drivers will no longer need to find gaps in fast moving traffic. Pedestrians will also be able to use new ‘red and green figure’ crossing facilities.

The roundabout speed limit will also be reduced to 40mph which will improve safety for all road users and should reduce the number of accidents.
