A prolific offender who smashed his way into a shop to grab two charity collection boxes has been jailed.

Alcoholic Matthew Barrett broke into the Bargain World store in Huddersfield town centre out of desperation, his solicitor said.

But District Judge Michael Fanning told the 39-year-old that he had no option but to send him to prison because he targeted funds meant for the needy.

Barrett broke into the store in Princess Alexandra Walk at 9.30pm on October 25.

He smashed the shop front window, causing £200 of damage, entered and removed the two charity boxes which contained a total of around £20.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the burglary was captured on CCTV.

Although the images of Barrett were not clear, police were able to identify him because of his distinctive gait.

Barrett, of Ridgeway Close in Dalton, admitted entering the building as a trespasser.

He also asked the court to take into consideration a further two thefts of alcohol from Morrisons.

Barrett has 110 offences to his name and was jailed last October for 18 weeks following a burglary.

Jonathan Slawinski, mitigating, said that his client had been a chronic alcoholic since the age of 17.

He said: “He drinks White Lightning cider which effects his health significantly.

“He’s isolated within the community and he’s experienced the prison environment for a considerable period of time.”

Mr Slawinski explained that Barrett was desperate for money after his benefits were substantially reduced.

He added: “On the night in question he was absolutely desperate for cash.

“He got £20, it was hardly worth the end result.”

Judge Fanning told Barrett that previous orders made by the court in a bid to help him with his problems had failed.

He said: “The sentence is so serious that only custody can be justified.

“You’ve smashed your way into a shop premises and stolen money donated by members of the public to help those less fortunate than themselves.

“You’ve short-circuited that and taken the money for your own use.”

Judge Fanning jailed Barrett for 26 weeks. He must also pay £80 victim surcharge.
