THIEVES are stealing Calderdale’s heritage.

Now people have been urged to be vigilant as thefts of stone flags have become rife.

In the past week, approximately 100 square metres of stone flags have been stolen from various locations.

Matthew Crowe, Area Highway Superintendent for Calderdale Council, said: “We would ask residents to report any missing flags to us so that we can make areas safe.

“If you see people taking flags, you should make note of vehicle details if possible. However, we would urge you not to approach anyone you see stealing flags, just call the police as soon as you can.

“We don’t have a stock of stone flags to replace missing ones we unfortunately have to tarmac areas where flags are taken, so it’s really important that residents keep a look out for unusual activity in their area so that flags are not removed for good.”

Insp Peter Smith said police would be making extra patrols in the areas and urged people to report suspicions..
