A PIONEERING green energy project for 150 council homes in Almondbury is on target to finish in May.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) is spending £1.6m on installing environmentally friendly ground source heat pumps at the Fernside estate in a bid to tackle fuel poverty in the area.

The project, with fuel company E.ON, involves drilling holes 80 metres down and installing pipes.

Water is then pumped round the pipes, picking up natural heat and taking it to household radiators and boilers. It will provide cheap energy and is thought to be the biggest project of its kind.

Yesterday a spokeswoman for KNH said the first 26 tenants were already benefiting from full central heating and hot water.
