IT’S going to be a fun Christmas for all at an Almondbury home.

For the residents of Ferndale Lodge – a home for adults with learning and physical disabilities – have got Wii mania.

They have been presented with one of the hugely-popular games consoles and games by Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table as part of the 2011 Christmas Wish campaign.

The campaign is organised by the Examiner and the Round Table to help people in need over the festive season.

Ferndale Lodge provides a home to Tanya Henson and six other residents, aged between 26 and 45.

Helen Long submitted a Christmas Wish request for a new wheelchair for Tanya, but that is more of a long-term project for the Round Table.

They hope to look at the prospects in the New Year, but were so moved by Tanya’s story that they decided to help out all the residents with the Wii.

Round Table member Jonathan Turton went up to Ferndale to meet the residents and staff.

He said: “It’s such a lovely place and the people there are wonderful.

“We could not help immediately over the request for a special wheelchair but that is something we will look at in the future.

“But we knew we wanted to do something and we hope they enjoy the Wii console.”

The centre opened in April 2011.

It offers each resident their own large bedroom with en suite facilities.

The rooms are equipped for each person’s needs and the communal facilities include a kitchen, dining area, multi-sensory room and minibus.

The idea is that residents live as normal a life as possible, helping with cooking and cleaning. Each place is funded by the local health authorities.

Services manager Michael Craven said: “It’s absolutely fabulous that the Round Table and the Examiner have stepped in to help and we are so grateful.

“The residents who live here at the moment will all be able to benefit from the games console and I know they will get a great deal of enjoyment out of it.

“One of the staff brought in a console a few weeks ago and everyone loved having a go. It’s going to be great for evenings in the lounge.”

The residents already enjoy regular arts and crafts sessions, visits to a music teacher and sessions at the hydrotherapy pool at Hollybank Trust.

It’s all been made possible thanks to the Pendragon Round Table, which is a registered charitable trust.

They are always looking for new members to have fun and support the community.

Members are a mixed bunch from different walks of life who meet regularly to enjoy a laugh and lively banter.
