THE United States was represented at a village's Remembrance Sunday service.

Col Sandy Bignell, of the USAF, based at the Menwith Hill listening station near Harrogate, represented his country at Birdsedge.

He attended the service in recognition of the village being home to a large number of Americans during the Second World War.

The service was also attended by the Vice-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr John Brennan, Kirklees deputy mayor Clr Donald Firth, the chairman of Denby Dale Parish Council, Clr Tony Barlow and Kirklees councillors Jim Dodds and Elaine Ward.

The service was slightly different from previous years, with Birdsedge First School pupils laying poppy crosses to remember those who died serving their country.

* Some 80 members of three churches - Cowcliffe Methodist, St Hilda's at Cowcliffe and St Francis's, Fixby - came together for a Remembrance Sunday service at the Methodist Church.

They also shared communion.
