HE’S the man they call The Legend.

Town striker Andy Booth is one of the club’s favourite sons – a goal-scoring striker who has made hundreds of appearances for his hometown club.

But should the town honour him with a statue?

That’s the idea being put forward by Town fan Will McLean – and he’s gone to the very top to try and garner support.

Will has tabled a petition on the Number 10 Downing Street website, asking for a statue of Booth to be erected outside the Galpharm Stadium.

Will’s entry on the website reads: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to have a statue of Andy Booth outside the Galpharm Stadium, Huddersfield.

“Let’s give Huddersfield Town legend Andy Booth a home where he belongs - outside the Galpharm Stadium.

“The statue should be much the same as the one of Harold Wilson in the town centre.”

Wilson, of course, is probably Huddersfield’s most famous son and was a keen supporter of the Town club.

His statue, by Ian Walters, has pride of place in St George’s Square, outside the imposing railway station.

Booth – expected to be in the squad for tomorrow’s huge FA Cup tie against Chelsea – is Town’s third highest scorer, with 138 goals for the club.

He has played for Town, for Tottenham Hotspur and for Sheffield Wednesday in a career which has so far lasted for 573 games.

The Downing Street petition is remaining open until August for other fans to sign.
