COMPLAINTS against Kirklees Council’s planning department are nearly twice the national average.

The Local Government Ombudsman received 142 complaints against the council in 2005/06. The figure is average but the proportion of complaints about planning is far higher than normal.

A report to the council’s Standards Committee showed that of the 142 complaints, 41% concerned planning – the national average is 23%.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “The figures may be misleading because a significant number of these complaints relate to a single planning issue.’’

The report stressed the need to ask why planning complaints were higher than the national average.
