TENANTS on a Thongsbridge council estate are furious over weeks of delays in renovation work on their homes.

Homes at Elm Avenue, Larch Avenue and Beech Avenue on the Woodlands estate are being refurbished under the Decent Homes scheme.

The scheme for council- owned properties all over Kirklees involves fitting new kitchens, bathrooms, central heating, windows and doors to council homes.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing has contracted several firms to run the project.

Enterprise Ltd is running the project at Thongsbridge.

Residents at Woodlands hit out in April over delays and the poor standard of renovations.

Two months later, they say they are still in limbo.

Campbell Millett, chairman of Thongsbridge Tenants' and Residents' Association, lives at Elm Avenue.

Work has been continuing at his property for 11 weeks.

He said the work standard is not good and the stress of delays is taking its toll on him, his wife and children, aged four and 12.

The family have now taken two week-long holidays to escape the building work.

Mr Millett said: "Both my kids have asthma - so you are constantly cleaning up to stop dust. Our house is upside down. It doesn't feel like home anymore.

"This work is going to go on across Kirklees in future years and unless they start getting it right, it will be misery for other tenants."

Holme Valley councillor Donald Firth said the standard of work had improved since a public meeting in response to residents' complaints in April. But he said more could be done.

He said:

"I can't blame residents for being upset. The management is an issue, it could be handled better. It is a question of communication.

"There are quite a number of residents still being affected by work."

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing said:

"Enterprise Plc has been working pro-actively on the estate to get all outstanding work finished.

"The programme of work is discussed with tenants so they know what will be done and when. With the exception of one or two, tenants are satisfied with the progress."

"We agree there have been problems, but feel we have demonstrated our commitment to resolving them over the last few weeks."
