A PAIR of brothers say their father's resting place has been violated because they dared to speak out.

Tony and Paul Krol say their father's grave in Lockwood cemetery is the only one to have the headstone laid down by Kirklees Council staff - just nine days after they wrote a letter to the Examiner.

And the council has admitted staff tested the headstone after reading the letter.

The pair checked their father Jozef Karol Krol's headstone after Tony, 53, read about the council's checks on other gravestones.

In their letter to the Examiner, published on March 1, joiner Paul expressed surprise that people were being charged £200 to put right the problem when it took them just one hour to check their grave.

Paul, 49, from Birkby, said: "A letter arrived at my mum Anne's old house on Saturday morning.

"She has not lived there for 15 years, but my sister lives there so it got passed on.

"The council said they had to lay the headstone for health and safety. The headstone was solid. There was more chance of it winning the lottery than falling over."

Paul says his mum is now distraught.

He added: "It is terrible. We feel someone has read our letter and thought they would teach us a lesson for speaking out.

"It is the only gravestone in the cemetery to be laid down.

"Just two strides away there are unsteady ones, but they have not been touched."

A Kirklees spokesman said: "The family wrote to the newspaper to say they had re-fixed the headstone in Lockwood Cemetery.

"As the family had no permit to do this the headstone was re-tested by council staff after the concrete used had set.

"The headstone was not anchored to the ground, as is required.

"It was actually toppled by a push of the hand.

"It was not safe and was left flat and the family were contacted in writing."
