A HUDDERSFIELD fishing club is inviting people to come and try their hand at the sport.

And members also hope it will give local youngsters a new interest and divert them away from possible trouble.

Low Hills Angling Club at Lindley is keen to get people who have never tried fishing involved in the activity.

Members hope their location at beauty spot Low Hills Pond, off Plover Road, will tempt locals to take up a rod.

The club is particularly keen to get younger members involved and has made three places available for youngsters who want to give the hobby a try.

They will have their equipment provided and be able to get help and advice from the experienced fishermen at the club.

Clr Christine Stanfield said she hoped getting people involved in the club would help them appreciate the importance of the pond.

“The message we want to put out to local people is that this is here for everybody’s enjoyment. The anglers want to share this beautiful space and their hobby with anyone who is interested. Particularly, it would be something new and interesting young people could try.”

Clr Stanfield visited the pond on Saturday – the first day of the new fishing season – to see the anglers clearing the area and getting the pond ready for use.

It was created by the Sykes family as part of a small manor house and estate in the 19th century. The house is now gone and the area built on and all that remains is the ornamental pond.

Anyone who would like to know more about the club can visit the pond any day of the week and speak to members. Alternatively, ring secretary Tony Holdsworth on 07712098481.
