Angry bowlers confronted councillors over its controversial decision not to include bowls in the new sports centre.

Ann Hinchliffe and fellow Huddersfield Bowling Club members questioned why indoor bowling provision in Huddersfield’s new £36m sports centre has been axed in favour of more fitness stations.

Another bowler asked when the report to axe bowling was commissioned, but Clr Peter O’Neill, Cabinet member for leisure, instead told them when it was written.

The councillor was heckled by bowlers and his fellow councillors when he told them the current sports centre was “built for a different generation’s needs.”

Clr O’Neill added: “We will look at alternative options for indoor bowls and we will consult about it.”

Clr Burke, who was told in March indoor bowls provision remained part of the plans, said: “Obviously you have made a decision since then and not involved anybody else or engaged the bowlers.

“You have let the people down, let the bowlers down and let the people of Kirklees down.”

Clr O’Neill replied that the council faced a different situation now than they did in 2011.
