HUNDREDS of abandoned cats and kittens are seeking new homes.

The RSPCA has been inundated with abandoned felines which have been brought in by RSPCA inspectors, officers and members of the public.

Many of the adoption centres are now full and the RSPCA says it urgently needs people to come forward to adopt the animals.

The problem has been caused by a large number of kittens born to stray cats since Spring, an increase in abandonments and the usual reluctance of people to adopt a pet over the summer holiday period.

North regional animal welfare manager Peter Bolton is urging cat-lovers thinking about adopting a pet to contact their local branch immediately.

He said: “We have never known anything like it. Our centres have never been so crowded with cats and kittens and it’s heartbreaking to see so many animals without a permanent home.

“We have had some cats waiting months for the perfect owner to walk through the door.

“We have cats to suit every personality and household and hope there may be people out there willing to give these cats a second chance of happiness.

“There are so many animals needing help and you would be making a really positive difference to their lives.”

All cats and kittens at RSPCA animal centres are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped ahead of adoption.
