As an active member of her local Darby and Joan club, Annie Croft would organise day trips, event and parties for those celebrating special birthdays.

Even though she was a good deal older than those marking a big day.

And it has been that zest for life which saw her reach her own milestone on Saturday when she celebrated her 100th birthday.

Family and friends packed into the Ashfield Club at Lepton to wish Annie well. Some had travelled more than 400 miles to be there.

The birthday girl said: “It has been wonderful to see everyone. I have really enjoyed it.”

Originally from the Chapel Hill area of Huddersfield, Annie moved on to Deighton and Sheepridge and then Dalton in her later years. She now lives in a Dalton care home, but until a couple of weeks ago was still in her own home nearby, cared for by family and friends.

With her husband, Jim, she had two children. Brian is 74 and lives in Norfolk but her daughter, Norma, passed away.

Annie has five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She said: “I have been fine until all the excitement of the birthday got to me. But I’ll be OK.

“I still enjoy life and can’t believe I am 100. And I think I’m set for a few more years yet!”
