ANOTHER popular summer event has fallen foul of the atrocious weather.

Oakwell Hall Summer Fair at Birstall was due to take place on Sunday.

But the annual event has had to be cancelled due to bad weather which has resulted in waterlogged ground.

Part of the land, including the area used for parking was created on the site of the former Gomersal pit.

This has a clay soil which retains a lot of water.

This is the area which has been badly affected.

The event was to include toe-tapping music from the Ugly Jug Band and the best of brass from Shelley Brass Band.

Also planned was children's entertainment, a falconry demonstration, pony rides and fairground rides.

A strolling jester would have provided entertainment on the move and there were to be more than 70 craft, charity and community group stalls and a wide range of food stalls.

The fair is the latest event to be cancelled after heavy rainfall across the region.

Last weekend entertainment at Greenhead Park was called off, although the traditional Huddersfield Flower, Vegetable and Handicraft Show did go ahead as planned.

York racecourse officials have been forced to abandon the rest of this week’s Ebor meeting due to a waterlogged track.

Having already lost the first two days of the four-day fixture clerk of the course William Derby held an inspection at noon yesterday to assess the prospects for racing today and tomorrow.

But with further rain and no sign of significant quick improvement officials were left with no option but to cancel the rest of the week’s racing.

More rain is forecast, although there are hopes of a brighter weekend.
