WE need to be on our guard against burglars.

The past few days have seen a spate of crimes – especially in the Aspley area.

In one break-in, intruders climbed into a house in Smithy Lane through the cellar and stole property including a Nokia mobile phone, a Goodmans television, a Sony mobile phone and a Motorola mobile phone.

Thieves also struck twice in nearby Somerset Road. They entered one house through an unlocked door and stole a Wii console, a Casio digital camera and a wallet. From the second house, where the intruders got in through a window, they stole an Acer laptop computer and a Canon digital camera.

I would appeal for any information as to who is responsible to come forward. And has anyone offered any of these items for sale?

Be aware that you’re much less likely to be a victim of burglary if you take easy but effective steps to secure your home. Households with no security measures in place are 10 times more likely to be burgled than those with such simple measures as window locks and deadlocks.

Amazingly one in three burglaries happen when doors and windows are left open or unlocked – even when you are at home. Don’t become a victim. Don’t forget to lock up!

We also need help to solve a Valentine’s Day theft. Two girls stole property from the Lidl store in Castlegate on February 14. They took items including a bottle of 18-year-old malt whisky from display shelves, put them in a bag and left the shop.

One girl was white, aged about 14, with long dark hair, a black coat, a pink scarf and fingerless gloves. The second was of similar age, of mixed race, with a check jacket.

Anyone with any information should contact police on 0845 6060606.
