STOP speeding through our village – that’s the message from councillors in Farnley Tyas who want a 20mph limit imposed.

Kirkburton councillor Derek Hardcastle and Farnley Tyas parish councillors say commuters and students at the nearby Storthes Hall have been using their streets as a rat run.

Speedsters have repeatedly crashed into a wall at Butts Road and put pupils at Farnley Tyas First School at risk.

Kirklees Council last month released £1m to improve road safety across the borough. Now the councillors hope some of the cash will be spent on a road safety scheme in the village.

Clr Hardcastle said: “We have long been concerned that under Kirklees Council policy the only way to get funding prioritised for road safety was to wait for someone to get killed or injured”

Parish councillor Michelle Atkinson added: “What we really want to see is a 20mph zone through the village centre. These have proved to be successful in other areas.”
