MORE than £1,000 was raised for charity in a weekend at Wakefield Cathedral.

The fundraising followed an appeal for help from a bishop in Georgia to the Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Rev Stephen Platten.

Bishop Malkhaz, of the Evangelical Baptist Church, wrote describing the harrowing conditions in his country after gas pipelines were blown up on the Georgia/ Russia border.

He wrote that the entire population of Georgia was without gas heating in hospitals, schools and homes.

He added that the last few weeks had been particularly difficult as the weather was very cold and there had been the worst snowfall for 30 years.

The £1,100 for Georgia was raised at the Longing for Light special diocesan worship celebration, which was attended by worshippers from throughout the diocese, and from collections at three Sunday services.
