WORK on a children’s hospice and respite centre in Huddersfield will start in the summer.

Delighted officials of the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust confirmed yesterday that building work was due to begin within months on the site in Brackenhall.

And they also confirmed local architect Ian Whitworth as the man to bring the multi-million plans to fruition.

The Trust has been fundraising for almost 10 years and acquired the site off Fell Greave Road last year.

The build for the new centre is expected to take about 18 months and Trust officials are now in talks with building firms and contractors about the project.

The new hospice will care for seriously ill children from across the region and also offer respite care for families who need a break.

Trustee Martin Bradley said: “We are thrilled to be announcing Ian as our architect, as he did the original drawings, and we are confident that by working together we can produce the best building possible for the children and their families.”

Sarah Herrett, head of fundraising, said: “This is the most exciting year for the charity and we want to encourage as many people as possible to get involved.”
