Machine gun carrying police officers swooped on a quiet suburb of Huddersfield, hunting a wanted criminal.

Police say they cannot reveal the nature of the incident as it is currently ongoing.

The Examiner understands armed officers first arrived at Quarry Road, Gledholt at about 2pm.

Teams appear to have pursued the driver of a blue Vauxhall Corsa which has crashed into a fence at Elm Court flats at the end of the cul-de-sac.

At 3pm at least four pairs of machine gun carrying officers were stationed on street corners around Gledholt as the search continued.

The armed guards were on Clifton Road, Grasscroft Road and Eldon Road. Police dogs and handlers could be seen climbing through gardens and searching through alleys.

Shocked residents watched from their windows and driveways.

Mel Stancliffe, who lives in a second floor flat at Elm Court, said he had heard a disturbance and footsteps running and had looked out his window. He said: “I shouted down to officers to ask what they were doing and they said they were looking for a wanted male.“I asked if it was safe to come out and they said I should shut the window."

Later this afternoon armed police teams also descended on Larch Road in Paddock.

The heavily armed police surrounded a property on the quiet street.
