Several streets were sealed off by armed police after a manhunt through Huddersfield suburbs.

The drama began at around 2pm in Gledholt and ended early this evening when a suspect was arrested in the Paddock area.

The Examiner understands the incident unfolded after a car was chased into Quarry Road, Gledholt, early this afternoon.

Police appear to have pursued the driver of a blue Vauxhall Corsa which had crashed into a fence in the car park at Elm Court flats.

Several armed officers are thought to have been involved in the incident and by 3pm at least four pairs of them were stationed on street corners around Gledholt and Marsh as the search continued.

The officers were seen on Clifton Road, Grasscroft Road and Eldon Road.

Police dogs and handlers could be seen climbing through gardens and searching through alleyways.

Shocked residents watched from their windows and driveways as officers appeared to be carrying out a detailed search for a suspect.

Mel Stancliffe, who lives in a second floor flat at Elm Court, said he had heard a disturbance and footsteps running and had looked out his window.

“I shouted down to officers to ask what they were doing and they said they were looking for a wanted male,” he said.

“I asked if it was safe to come out and they said I should shut the window.”

The armed presence remained in Marsh and Paddock all afternoon and at about 5pm armed officers were seen near to Paddock junior school.

It was then that the drama is thought to have shifted to Larch Road in Paddock where residents watched as a man was taken away.

At least four police vehicles, including an unmarked one, were on the street.

And more than 10 officers were involved in this final stage of the drama.

This evening, West Yorkshire Police were unable to reveal much information about the incident.

The arrest was not related to last week’s shooting in Springwood, although armed officers had been in the area making inquiries into it.
