A BUS driver was taken to hospital after being robbed at gunpoint on his vehicle.

Two men fled with a small amount of cash after threatening the driver with a handgun in Meltham.

Shortly after his ordeal the driver, a 57-year-old Waterloo man, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with chest pains.

He was later given the all-clear and allowed home.

The First Bus company today imposed a curfew on buses going on to the Sunny Heys estate in Meltham.

Last night's raid was the latest in a series of attacks on buses in the village.

Four windows were smashed - possibly by airgun pellets - on a bus on Station Street last Friday.

Now, the First Huddersfield bus company has acted to protect its drivers and passengers.

The 321 service, which normally goes on to Sunny Heys, will stop at Meltham Market Place from 6pm onwards until further notice.

First Huddersfield business director Graham Riley said: "It is an extreme measure and we realise it will punish the innocent as well as the guilty.

"But we have to put the safety of our drivers and passengers first.

"We are also offering a £500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for last night's robbery."

The robbery came after another bus driver, 49-year-old Mr Balvinder Singh Hundal, was knifed as he walked through Huddersfield bus station at 10.20am on Tuesday.

A youth hit him several times before slashing him on his arm with a knife which left a 4in gash.

Mr Hundal needed specialist surgery at Bradford Royal Infirmary and is now recovering at his Salendine Nook home.

A 17-year-old Huddersfield youth has been charged with wounding and was due before the town's magistrates today.

Last night's robbery happened at 11.35pm on Broadlands.

Two men got on and demanded cash from the driver, who was behind his protective screen. No-one else was on the bus.

One of the men had a small black handgun. They fled towards Sunny Heys.

One of the robbers is in his late teens or early 20s, 5ft 11in and slim.

He wore a black hat, a black scarf covering his face and dark clothes.

His tracksuit bottoms had two white lines running down the sides.

His accomplice is 5ft 7in and wore dark clothes. His face was covered.
