POLICE have arrested a driver after a toddler was badly hurt in an accident near her home.

Eighteen-month-old Anam Hanif was playing with her older sisters on a tarmac forecourt on Garden Street in Ravensthorpe at the time.

The incident happened at 4.45pm on Sunday, March 30.

Anam was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital, but her injuries were so serious she was transferred to St James’ Hospital in Leeds for specialist care.

She is in a stable but poorly condition there.

A 25-year-old Ravensthorpe man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

He was released on police bail pending further inquiries.

After she was hurt Anam’s seven-year-old sister, Alina, picked her up and carried her home.

Anam’s mum, 24-year-old Safina Kauser, has kept a vigil at her daughter’s bedside while father Hanif Khan – who runs a grocery store on Huddersfield Road – has been helped by friends and relatives.

He splits his time between the hospital and home looking after Alina, six-year-old daughter Amina, and three-year-old son Hassib.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Det Con Jason Thorpe or Det Con Lisa Robertshaw at Dewsbury CID on 01924 431086 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
