A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a 16-year-old youth died in a lagoon.

The teenager, from Batley, was in a Skoda with two men when it careered down an embankment into the water at Horbury, near Wakefield, at 8.35pm yesterday.

The driver and another passenger scrambled to safety from the submerged car.

But the 16-year-old never resurfaced.

Emergency services were called to the lagoon, next to Horbury Sailing Club, and searched the area.

Insp Mick Starkey, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "Our helicopter searched the water using a thermal-imaging camera and the underwater search team attended and recovered a body."

The two survivors were taken to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield.

One was detained overnight for observation.

The tragedy is being investigated by Wakefield CID.

A 23-year-old Batley man was arrested this morning on suspicion of manslaughter.
