A PRISONER was arrested today on suspicion of murdering a Dewsbury man, a fellow inmate at Armley prison, Leeds.

Police said the man, aged 25, was being questioned after an incident at the prison today.

The man who died was Shahid Aziz, 30.

He was waiting for sentence after being convicted of criminal damage at Leeds Crown Court on March 31.

A police spokeswoman said the 25-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident.

She said Aziz was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, but died from his injuries.

She added: "The coroner's officer has been informed and a forensic post-mortem is due to take place later today."

Police inquiries are continuing, in conjunction with the Prison Service.

A Prison Service spokesman said:

"Our sympathies are with the dead man's family and friends."

An independent investigation into the death was being carried out by Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Stephen Shaw, he added.
