AN arrest warrant for a fraudster who fled court has been withdrawn after he was in a serious accident.

Leonard McCormick, 27, vanished from Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on November 20.

He had been due to be sentenced after admitting conning a man shopping in Huddersfield town centre.

Saman Ahmad was waiting for a taxi on Brook Street when a vehicle containing three men, including McCormick, pulled up beside him.

They offered to sell Mr Ahmad a laptop for £120 and he agreed.

However, when he checked the bag he found that it contained two bottles of water and two cans of baked beans.

Leeds-based traveller McCormick had been warned he faced jail. But he left the building before magistrates could pass sentence.

The bench issued a warrant for his arrest.

Magistrates were told yesterday that police had requested the withdrawal of the arrest warrant.

They heard that McCormick, of Cottingley Springs Caravan Site, had been in a serious road accident and was hospitalised.

Magistrates agreed to withdraw the arrest order and replace it with a warrant with bail for when he is fit to attend.
