POLICE have urged Town fans to arrive in Cardiff early for the play-off final on Monday.

They say supporters are likely to be searched and urge people not to take bags to the ground, as this could delay security checks at the turnstiles.

Fans will be allowed inside the Millennium Stadium in the centre of the city from 1pm for the 3pm kick-off.

Supt Michael Long said: "There is no specific threat to the stadium or anywhere in South Wales.

"However, we must be mindful of the changing climate and the increased risk of terrorist activity across Europe.

"Any action being taken by South Wales Police is a precaution in response to the increased risk of terrorism world-wide.

"It is important that Wales is not considered a soft option by any potential terrorists.

"However, it must be stressed the risk is no greater or lesser in Wales than anywhere else.

"We are continually liaising with our colleagues at the Millennium Stadium and other emergency services to ensure a co-ordinated response.

"My advice to the public is to continue with your daily lives. But be vigilant and let us know if you become aware of anything that causes concern. Be alert, not alarmed."

Supt Long also urged fans to arrive in Cardiff early and soak up the atmosphere.

He added: "This is the fourth year the play-offs have been in Cardiff.

"Previous years have shown that fans setting off early for the Welsh capital is the key to ensuring an efficient traffic plan.

"The stadium is in the heart of the city and bars, restaurants and shops will open from early morning to welcome visitors."

Extra coach and car parks are being provided and will be signposted from the Cardiff turn-off from of the M4.

The roads around the Millennium Stadium are pedestrianised two hours before kick-off and reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

This allows safer access for fans, visitors and residents.

Both the police and Cardiff Council say the train is the best way to get to the stadium, with the station just a two-minute walk away.
